I think out of all of my portraiture images this is my favourite mainly because I think the way the way the light has caught my face is really clear and bright which I like even after I took down the brightness in Lightroom. I also really like the yellow background within this piece and also in the familiar image because it really gives the image a bright and warm tone and I think it goes really well with what I’m wearing as it makes it pop. In terms of clarity and focus, although my eyes are not directed towards the camera they’re quite clear even with the shadow over one of them. I chose to position myself looking away from the camera because I knew with the split lighting I had set up I could get a nice shadow on one side of my face which came out exactly as I had hoped. The shadowing is subtle and doesn’t take up all the audience’s attention. I also think the colour palette within the image works well, with the mix of the white and yellow and then the green coming in from the hat which I feel really ties the image together. To improve the image I might have straightened my t shirt out before hand to stop those little shadows forming on it which I find a bit distracting.

One of the main things I like about this image is how the colours of his clothes work really well with the yellow background. The mix of the grey, black and the yellow are really appealing to the eye in my opinion. I also think the way the light catches his hair gives it a really bright and punchy colour that contrasts the background. Again like my self-portrait I’ve set up split lighting but this time I’ve had my subject look into the camera to get a more prominent shadow effect across his face. I really like the shadow effect in this image because it works really well with his vacant expression showing there might be another darker side to the subject. Although the image is centred quite well I think to improve it I would’ve brought the subject forward away from the background to get rid of the shadow on the yellow which would’ve made the image a lot brighter but I corrected a lot this when I edited it in Lightroom. I think focus was another problem within this image because I chose to take the pictures free hand and without a tripod and my unsteady hand seems to have made the eyes a little soft.

I took this image when I was outside the MTEC Building and this man was kind enough to let me take his picture. I was really nervous about doing the stranger portrait when we were told about it because I’m not very confident with people and I thought that I wouldn’t know how to use the camera and embarrass myself. But when it actually came to taking the photo I felt a lot more confident with the camera after using it for the other briefs which actually made me a lot more confident about interacting with the subject. When I took the photos I tried to give as little guidance into how he posed as possible because I wanted him to do what he felt looked good which I think is where you really see how confident people are in front of the camera. I really like how this image turned out as I feel the person who I photographed felt really comfortable in front of the camera which allowed me to get this shot. I think the lighting in the image turned out really nice and clear even though the day I shot on was very gloomy and pale but this was easily fixed in Lightroom through the changing the contrast and clarity. Like my other portraiture images I think the colours in the image work really well, with the sandy coloured background working nicely with his white t shirt. I think the image is pretty much in focus even though I wasn’t using a tri pod and I think the eyes have come out quite crisp and sharp. If I had to improve the image I would’ve got a lot more of his body in the shot so the top half wasn’t taken up by the background.
